Feedback Strategies

You must persist despite setbacks (image source from cheezburger)

The article, How to Give Feedback Without Sounding Like aJerk, gave great advice on how to not sound rude. When I give feedback, I usually speak my mind and it can sound rude but I’m not actually trying to be rude. There are some good tips in this article that I could use when giving feedback. First off, I could start off with giving a positive feedback then explaining my concerns. I just need to be transparent when giving feedback. It is recommended to point out the problem exactly and not beat around the bush so we’re not rambling. Rambling can be very negative and offensive. Also, usually when people give feedback, they are supposed to ask if that person wants feedback. Since we are required to give feedback, we could always open our sentences in a kindly manner so they’re not as defensive.

Feedforward is the best option when getting criticism. In the article, Try Feedforward Instead of Feedback, talks about feedforward is more efficient and useful than feedback. Instead of trying to be nitpick about things, I could explain how to make it more successful. For example, I could tell them “Here are some ideas for the future! Please try to accept my comments in a positive way but disregard it if you do not think it applies”. When giving feedback, it tends to be very defensive and them wanting to be prove how they are right, and I am wrong. So, if I come to it in a positive way, they would most likely take my advice into consideration.

Getting feedback or giving feedback or feedforward can always be frustrating. Mostly when I get feedback or I give feedback because I feel like I can be wrong. I can never actually understand peoples train of thought because we all process differently.

Feedback Thoughts

In the article, Why Rejection Hurts So Much – and What to DoAbout it, rejection is one of the most common emotional things we handle as human beings. It can happen through text messages, applying for scholarships, or even dating websites. Rejections seems to be a great damage because our self-esteem is hurting the most. Being in emotional pain is probably the worse than being in physical pain. Sometimes, rejection can literally emotionally and mentally destroy you and worsen your physical health. No one in life wants to be rejected and to always get what they want, but that is not how life works. Usually after rejection, we should try to revive our self-worth. Remind ourselves to know how much worth and valuable we are. Do not let rejection from stopping ourselves to be better.

It sucks to say, but doubt does play a big role in my head. I always doubt myself in school or in my relationship because I never feel like I am sufficient. In the article, Seven Ways to Crush Self-Doubt in Creative Work is very interesting. It talked about how I should not compare myself or strive to be perfect. Honestly, I set myself really low for school. I always doubt myself when I try to apply for graduate school because I feel like I am not half qualified as other students and I am scared to get rejected. I drown myself in self-doubt on how I feel mediocre, but I am not. I now have this mindset that no one is better than me and I am not better than them. I came to realize we have our own qualities and specialty where I should not drown myself in doubt. There is no such thing as perfect. If I set myself to strive high in school, I should keep striving for it. There is no such thing as perfectionism, but it can only be perfect in my eyes.
